The Heritage Oasis Trail in AlUla is a captivating 3-kilometers walk that takes visitors through lush palm groves, date farms, and historic mud-brick houses. This trail highlights the heritage of the Al’Ula oasis, offering a unique glimpse into the region’s rich history and natural beauty.

Saudi Arabia only opened its doors to tourism in 2019, and with limited visitors during the health crisis, many are still discovering the wonders of AlUla. As someone who has spent considerable time in the NEOM region, exploring AlUla for the first time left me in awe of its vibrant landscapes and historical significance.

Several trails are offered with various entry and exit points. In this article, I suggest following the Alula Heritage Oasis Trail. I recommend going in the late afternoon when the light is more beautiful. All trails are freely accessible and open to visitors day and night.

Starting the AlUla Heritage Oasis Trail

The trail begins near Orange and leads toward the ancient city of Dadan, the former capital of the Lihyanite and Dadanite civilizations. Positioned along ancient incense trade routes, Dadan flourished as a major city in northern Arabia during the first millennium BC.

I started my walk in the late afternoon, as the sun began to dip and bathe the landscape in warm orange hues. With temperatures reaching 45°C during the low season, I didn’t meet anyone, a peaceful experience that felt like stepping back in time.

For now, you can still stroll through the buildings. This might change soon as more visitors will come and visit the trail. However, I wouldn’t advise anyone to use the stairs given their structure!

Summer Residences of AlUla’s Inhabitants

Historically, AlUla’s residents maintained two homes: winter residences in the old town and summer houses near the oasis. During the hotter months, they moved to the oasis to harvest and store dates. Walking along the trail, you’ll encounter remnants of these structures, though some staircases are unsafe to climb. The trail also passes by farms and lush greenery—a stark contrast to the surrounding desert.

Rest Stops and Seasonal Charm

The trail offers plenty of inviting spots to rest and enjoy tea or coffee. However, many of these were closed during my low-season visit. I’d love to return in the winter months, when cooler temperatures and a bustling atmosphere breathe life into the area. During the trail, I only met a few families having coffee.

I follow the trail and pass through structures made of fired brick. Gradually, the landscape changes to one of palm trees and farms. Thanks to its fertile soil and abundant water, Al’Ula has rich agriculture. The greenery is a welcome sight after all the time spent in the desert. You can even feel the coolness!

Sunset on the Trail

As I continue walking, the sun begins to set, painting the landscape in shades of orange. The vibrant colours of the oasis become even more beautiful in this golden hour, and the heat starts to dissipate.

This is my favorite time of day, a perfect moment to soak in the tranquility before heading back to town for dinner. It’s an ideal way to end a visit to the AlUla Heritage Oasis Trail

Aljadidah Village: A Perfect Ending

After completing the trail, head to Aljadidah Village, a pedestrian area filled with shops and restaurants. It’s the perfect spot for a relaxed stroll or a meal after your walk. A lot more people were walking around, coming for dinner or just going for a walk.
